Van Wormer Hall and Teachers College/Dyer
Hall are both existing buildings of historic importance on the
University of Cincinnati campus. A major objective of the LEED
rating process promoting sustainable and high-performance design
is the efficient reuse of existing building stock. In the complete
rehabilitation of these campus buildings additional usable space
has been developed, mechanical system efficiency improved through
commissioning (fine tuning) equipment which is reduced in size
due to improvements
in the building envelope: insulation, glazing,
roofing, daylight control (to reduce lighting load and other mechanical
load requirements). Occupant comfort and performance are improved
due to improvements in indoor environmental quality through air
filtration, more individual controllability of systems and reduction
in voc
emitting materials. Resource consumption is reduced through reuse
of buildings with minimal increase in footprint, reduction in construction
and demolition waste, increase in recycled content of materials
and use of locally harvested and manufactured materials.
