Involving major rehabilitation and additions ultimately totalling $65 million and 200,000 gsf, this project for the College of Education creates a dramatic new central atrium and entry façade opening onto a redesigned pedestrian-friendly courtyard. Multiple floor levels that descend with the site, along with the fact that this complex was previously created from two separate buildings, suggested the primary challenges: coherent circulation and identity. Existing interior spaces of special historic importance have been preserved and enhanced for today’s activities. These spaces then formed the basis for the re-design of the remaining interior environment, blending traditional architectural expression with modern materials and furnishings. This project is certified LEED Silver.
